While Katy Perry, Adele, and Kanye West dominated the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards when it came to nominations, there were also plenty of big names who received some love in a few assorted categories.
First, let’s start with one of the big stunners — MTV only handing out three nominations for the awards despite having one of the most-hyped albums of the year in “Born This Way.” In addition to that, Gaga also had a video in “Judas” that was one of the most expensive on record — but most of the love went instead to the video for the title track.
Meanwhile, Justin Bieber scored a Best Male Video nomination despite not really even having much of a major single in the past year. “U Smile” was the song that awards chose, and it was released in the late summer / early fall of 2011. (The video itself features Bieber trying to “date a fan” — which is the wish of millions of teenage girls out there.)
The one thing that neith Bieber nor Gaga have done yet is speak out public about their nominations — but we figure that will come eventually.
What surprises you the most — that Bieber still got a nomination this year without much in the way of new music, or that Gaga only got three?

‘With the time off, I’m able to think, pray and just kind of grow up,’ Bieber says.
Despite being spotted hitting the studio earlier this week with Chris Brown, Justin Bieber just revealed that he has plans to take some time off this summer. After spending the last few years touring, recording and being beyond famous, he plans to spend the summer much like any other 17-year-old.
“I’ve been working so hard, I’m taking a month off,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been great to just think and enjoy hanging out with my friends. I’m still growing up, and when you’re working every day, you don’t really get a chance to figure out who you are. So with the time off, I’m able to think, pray and just kind of grow up.”
That growing-up time has included some karaoke sessions with his lady love, Selena Gomez, and crashing weddings with her as well. He also explained that he’s doing something equally normal: staying in bed. “For sure [I'll be resting],” he said. “I’ve been sleeping in a lot.”
Earlier this summer, he told MTV News that his favorite thing to do when he does get some time off is grill. Bieber is an avid BBQ pit master. “Favorite thing to do in the summer?” he pondered for a moment. “Have barbecues.”
“I can barbecue. I mean, I don’t make the sauce very well, but I can grill,” he explained enthusiastically. “No, [I can't cook]. I can just grill and stuff.”
Once he does wrap up that well-deserved time off, his work on his forthcoming album continues. It’s a project that’s been long-simmering for the teen superstar. “[I'm] writing about how I feel and producing. I’ve been producing on my laptop and on my computer,” he said. “I’ve been really into it and, hopefully, this next album will be huge.”
“I’ve done a lot on my acoustic guitar, so it’s gonna have that vibe,” he continued. “I’m not gonna really limit myself. I think music is music, and genre — I mean, I know there’s country music, there’s rock music, but my music is different. My voice is not meant for any style. I just want to make music.”

According to Terry Lundgren, president and chief executive officer of Macy’s Inc., Justin Bieber‘s Someday fragrance “has now become the biggest celebrity fragrance launch on record.” The mad mob of Bieber fans at Macy’s Herold Square location launch of the fragrance on June 23 may have had something to do with it! Celebrity fragrances are released left and right. Beyonce, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez are just a very miniscule glimpse at the celeb fragrances currently on the market, but it seems that these stars have some serious competition in the form of Justin – and it doesn’t sound like he’s stopping anytime soon.
Although it may be unconventional for a boy to release a women’s fragrance, Bieber pulled it off big time. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Someday netted more than $3 million in retail sales at Macy’s in less than three weeks! WWD quotes Karen Grant, The National Purchase Diary’s vice president and senior global industry analyst, “If it sustains this momentum, it will become the number-one-selling fragrance of 2011.”
It may have helped that the first 325 fans that purchased the Someday gift set ($135) got to take a photo with the dreamy pop singer at the Macy Herald Square June 23. A portion of the profits go to two of JB’s favorite charities, Pencils Of Promise, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
According to WWD, in late May, Bieber declared, “Let’s be real, the way a girl smells is very important to a guy! I have such a deep connection with my fans, so creating a fragrance that I personally love is another way I can bring them close to my world.” Pass the flower-shaped-bottle please!
